什么?!这些被我们用烂的句子居然都是错的!!

相信很多雅思考生分不清楚一个英语表达是口语表达还是书面表达。有些看着很“高大上”的表达其实是口语表达,在写作中误用会被扣分。

看看这些年来我们在写作中常用的口语表达。

注意:这些表达在雅思写作中出现都会被扣分!扣分!扣分!(重要的事情说三遍)

 

1 “LAST BUT NOT LEAST”:

WHY?

This is most often used in SPOKEN ENGLISH! Note that you should write an argumentative essay for IELTS-task 2 in an ACADEMIC or FORMAL style.

 

WHAT TO APPLY:

“Last”/”finally” (LISTING)

这句话在口语中是个漂亮的表达,但是并不适用于严谨的雅思写作,别以为一句话越长就越好,简单粗暴的“last和finally”在雅思写作中更为适用……

 

2 Proverbs: “Every coin has two sides”, and its misquoting form, “as a coin has two sides”:

WHY?

Unoriginal language, officially judged as “annoying and disappointing”.

WHAT TO APPLY?

Simply avoid proverbs in Academic/formal writings.

奉劝大家在雅思写作中尽量少用俗语谚语,尤其是自己并不确定出处和用法的俗语,否则遇到严谨事多的考官,就会扣分!扣分!再扣分!

 

3 “WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH TECHNOLOGY/SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY”:

WHY?

Non-English directly translated from Mandarin Chinese; The ADJUNCT itself is not grammatically problematic, but it has just become overused or misused, as there are situations where the given topic is about some irrelevant THEME, such as, “Causes of sedentary lifestyles”, and the FIRST sentence of the essay very often starts with, “With the development of high technology…” Annoying! Off-topic!

WHAT TO APPLY:

Avoid, and learn to MEAN in AUTHENTIC ENGLISH.

考过大学四六级的同学应该看到这句话很眼熟吧,四六级万用开头句居然是错误的?OMG,我们居然用了这么多年!从现在开始感觉丢掉这样的introduction,忘记这句话吧!

 

4 “This essay will discuss both sides and give an opinion”

WHY?

This is a TYPICAL and PROBLEMATIC thesis statement very often placed as the last sentence of the opening paragraph, lacking DIRECT MAIN RESPONSE to the give task. Penalty will also be applied due to memorised wordings with more than 7 words directly copied from the instruction/topic.

WHAT TO APPLY:

Avoid.

这句话也很眼熟吧?国内各大压死机构都是这么教的。呵呵,其实这就是句毫无意义的废话,也是五分写作万能模板句。但是你想拿这个考7分?孩纸,你还是醒醒吧~

 

5 “In the modern era” or “Recent era has witnessed…”

WHY?

There is no need to put in a time frame unless the task is about an issue in the past compared to the present. Also, the initialised CLAUSE, “Recent ERA has WITNESSED…” (Personification-Rhetoric) is a problematic linguistic feature applied to TASK 2, being inappropriate to the TYPE of TEXT.

WHAT TO APPLY:

Simply avoid, and learn to PARAPHRASE the topic.

既然题目没有让你对比过去和现在,你就不要画蛇添足,加上这么一句没用的废话!Recent ERA has WITNESSED…没有英文母语者这么说话的……

 

6 “broaden a person’s horizon”

WHY?

Direct translating from Chinese, non-English.

WHAT TO APPLY:

“Developing deeper understanding to…”, “opening one’s mind to…” or “enriching one’s life experience…”

中国人写文章最喜欢喊口号,写任何教育类文章都喜欢跟“开阔视野”联系起来!当然小编没有说喊口号不行,但是口号得喊得对,broaden horizon是典型的Chinglish,也是国内某些大机构教材里最爱用的一个词,天哪,我们又是用了这么多年!下次在写作中可以用“Developing deeper understanding to…”, “opening one’s mind to…” or “enriching one’s life experience…”代替。

 

7 “It cannot be denied that…”/ “There is no doubt that…”

WHY?

Overuse (often misused): too mechanical

WHAT TO APPLY

Using more NATURAL language-choices to avoid memorising; “One reason that XXX is crucial is…” “The argument in favour of XXX can be more persuasive due to…”

又是一句典型的模板句,想必在国内学过雅思和大学四六级的同学们又会觉得很亲切吧!从今天开始,如果你想考7分?那就忘掉它!忘掉它!忘掉它!
